"Fake news": the tools and projects behind the annoying buzzword

"Fake news" has become the new buzzword. Nevertheless, behind this trend, tools and projects have emerged that are interesting to discover and test: fact-checking, source-checking, media analytics, algorithm transparency... These initiatives help consolidate quality journalism and enrich public debate.

Algo Transparency

We have developed a program that detects the most suggested videos by the YouTube algorithm through data search. Our mission is to inform citizen about the way algorithms that have an impact on access to information work. YouTube is the first platform we have worked on but we are developing tools for other platforms.

Media cloud

Media Cloud is an open source platform for studying media ecosystems. By tracking millions of stories published online, our suite of tools allows researchers to track how stories and ideas spread through media. Our tools are designed to aggregate, analyze, deliver and visualize information, answering complex quantitative and qualitative questions about the content of online media. Media Cloud is a joint project by the MIT Center for Civic Media and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

RealDonaldContext

RealDonaldContext is a Chrome extension that adds context to Trump's not-quite-accurate tweets. Donald Trump's primary means of communicating with the public is Twitter. Unfortunately, his tweets aren't always entirely accurate, by mistake or by design. The Washington Post's Fix team has created this extension to add more context or corrections to things that Trump tweets.
